1984 Dallas Harlequins - USA Rugby National Champions
In 2019 the TRU honored the 1984 Dallas Harlequins team who won the USA Rugby National Championship.
The Dallas Harlequins traveled to Hartford looking to capture the National Title which eluded them the year before. The Western Rugby Union Champion Harlequins looked extremely impressive during their Territorial Championships, defeating the Denver Barbarians, the Dallas Rugby Club, and then went on to dominate the Oklahoma University RFC in the final, winning by a score of 59-10.
Always a force in the West, the Harlequins, led by the likes of U.S.A. Eagle trialists Mike Carey and Ed Gheur, they had won territorials for four consecutive years. Their second XV have captured the Texas B-side championship for the last three years – a true sign of the depth and strength of the club. The Western Rugby Union relied heavily on Dallas’ talent pool to man its representative side which included ten Harlequins on its roster.
The Dallas Harlequins drew the Chicago Lions, the Midwest RFC champion, in the opening round. The Harlequins defeated Chicago and secured their first Championship and the first for the TRU. Since then they have have finished in the top 3 at USA National Championships 6 times and are 21-time TRU Champions.
