In January 1978 I left Old Dominion University in Virginia and headed west. After dropping sister off at TCU, I made my way south for the beach. I literally picked Corpus Christi after placing my finger on a map, a town I had never heard of and where I didn’t know anyone. It wasn’t long before I joined the fledgling rugby team and with a couple of other guys started the Corpus Christi Crabs.
In 1978 I started the 7s by the Sea rugby tournament which continues to this day. I started the South Texas Tournament in 1980 which rotates between the clubs based in South Texas; it continues to this day.
In the 1980s, when there was a counties select tournament, I helped to organize, select, and play for the Midland counties.
In the early 1990s I helped with the formation of the Victoria Kronks Rugby team. Myself and others played for both the Kronks and the Crabs until they became an established club.
Through the years I have served in every club position from Captain to President.
I started playing old boys rugby in 2008 at the age of 51 and have served as Captain and manager for the Texas XXXs Old Boys Club.
Throughout my years playing rugby I have been fortunate enough to travel with many teams. I have played rugby in Mexico, Hawaii, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Argentina, and Cape Town, South Africa. In 2016 I refereed in Wales in an old boys tournament proudly promoting the great state of Texas!
In 2015 I embarked on the current phase of my rugby career as a referee which I continue to this day. I also assist with coaching college players, youth players, and club players. I have now attained level 200 in coaching.
